Monthly Gift Highlights
We are pleased to highlight the following gifts from October 2002:
  • The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded $28 million to the AIDS Research Institute for studying the efficacy of the diaphragm in AIDS prevention in Africa.
  • The Larry L. Hillblom Foundation made a series of commitments totaling more than $12 million to create the Larry L. Hillblom Center for the Biology of Aging and to support research projects in diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases and vision disorders.
  • The Franklin and Catherine Johnson Foundation made a four-year, $3 million pledge to fund construction at UCSF Mission Bay and name a yet-to-be-determined space at the new campus.
  • The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded a five-year, $1.3 million grant to the UCSF School of Dentistry. The School will use this grant to increase from five to 13 the number of community clinics it operates in California.
  • The Carroll and Nancy O'Connor Foundation gave $200,000 to the Wheeler Center for the Neurobiology of Addiction's researcher fellowship fund. This gift, made by Nancy O'Connor in memory of her son, will fund four Hugh O'Connor Fellowships in Addiction Research.
