Monthly Gift Highlights
We are pleased to highlight the following gifts and pledges from May 2003:
  • Biogen, Inc. has given $75,000 in support of patient care programs at the UCSF Multiple Sclerosis Center.

  • The Cancer League, Inc. has given $25,000 to support cancer risk community education seminars and $9,000 to fund research into the effects of Chinese herbal treatments on ovarian cancer at the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center.

  • Gilead Sciences, Inc. has given $75,000 to fund HIV InSite (http://hivinsite.ucsf.edu), a project of the UCSF Center for HIV Information (CHI) at the Department of Medicine at the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center. Laurence Peiperl, MD, director of the CHI, is editor-in-chief of HIV InSite.

  • Diana and Harry Hind have given $2.65 million to establish the Harry W. and Diana V. Hind Distinguished Professorship in Pharmaceutical Science.

  • Johnson & Johnson has given $50,000 to support the HIV and AIDS Program at the UCSF Center of Excellence in Women's Health under the direction of Nancy Milliken, MD.

  • Tina and John Mehan have committed $100,000 to support endometrial cancer research under the direction of Alan B. Glassberg, MD, at the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center.

  • The Perrigo Company Foundation has given $57,000 to the UCSF School of Pharmacy.

  • The Jeffrey and Karen Peterson Family Foundation has gifts of $250,000 to support recruitment of a medical oncologist for the UCSF Program in Thoracic Oncology, $250,000 to fund research in the UCSF Program in Pediatric Leukemia, $200,000 to fund research at the UCSF Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases and patient care at the ALS Research and Patient Care Center, and $25,000 to fund pediatric patient care at the UCSF Diabetes Center.

  • Carla Emil and Richard Silverstein have pledged $50,000 to the Stem Cell Discovery Fund to support stem-cell related research at UCSF. Their gift will be matched by Andrew S. Grove, National Chair of the Campaign for UCSF, as part of the Grove Challenge for Stem Cell Research.
