Grands Fund Breast Cancer and Brain Tumor Research at UCSF
Nancy and Stephen
Nancy and Stephen Grand are longtime supporters of cancer causes. As a board member of the Karmanos Comprehensive Cancer Center in Detroit, Stephen developed a keen interest in medical research. Eager to continue their philanthropic involvement after moving to California, the Grands were attracted by the high caliber of research in two areas at the Comprehensive Cancer Center: breast oncology and glioblastoma, a highly malignant brain tumor. Gifts from the Grands totaling over $300,000 will fund pathbreaking research in these fields.

The cause of breast cancer hit close to home for the Grands, Stephen says, when he lost his mother to the disease. Her fate is shared by too many. "One in eight women will be devastated by breast cancer," he explains. "It's a frightening disease."

The Grands are committed to helping UCSF improve outcomes for these women. Their gift will fund the UCSF Breast Oncology Developmental Research Program, which stimulates and supports promising pilot projects in breast cancer research and transforms their findings into improved cancer management and control.

The Grands were equally impressed by a collaboration between UCSF and Israeli glioblastoma researchers. UCSF radiation oncologist Daphne Haas-Kogan, MD, along with a medicinal chemistry investigator from Bar Ilan University and an oncology researcher at Tel Aviv University, are exploring the genetic alterations responsible for glioblastoma tumors. They aim to develop novel therapies to treat this deadly disease. For the 10,000 patients diagnosed with glioblastoma each year—patients who face a one-year survival rate—these new treatments cannot come too soon.

"UCSF oncology researchers are outstanding. They are among the brightest you'll find," Stephen affirms. "To support them is to support the future of medicine."
