June 5 marked the 25th anniversary of the first reported AIDS illness. To acknowledge the men and women who have generously contributed time, resources, and funds to AIDS programs and research at UCSF, the AIDS Research Institute (ARI) held its First Annual Director's Circle Reception on June 13.
Hosted by Sue and Michael Steinberg at their new home in the San Francisco St. Regis, the reception was attended by more than 30 UCSF faculty, friends, and members of the Director's Circle, which honors donors who have given $5,000 or more to the Institute.
In his opening remarks, ARI Director John Greenspan thanked supporters for helping to make the Institute a global leader in AIDS research, treatment, and prevention: "You have been vital partners in our efforts to use the best basic science, behavioral studies, direct-care services, and policy development to combat HIV/AIDS. I hope that each and every one of you feels proud to be part of this fight."
As Greenspan emphasized, the ARI's battles are not over. "There is much more to be done, and we must continue to be vigilant," he explained. "I am confident that, in time, we can beat this terrible disease—ensuring that the quarter-century commemoration will be the last monumental anniversary of HIV/AIDS."
