Friends of Medicine Reception Bolsters Ambulatory Care Education at UCSF

More than 30 faculty and friends of UCSF assembled at the Pacific Heights home of Bill and Leigh Sherwood Matthes on May 16 to raise awareness of the need to fund ambulatory (outpatient) care education. Highlights of the evening included talks by Talmadge King, MD, interim chair of the department of medicine; William Grossman, MD, chief of UCSF's cardiology division; and Josh Adler, MD, medical director of ambulatory care at UCSF.
As Adler explained, medical students and residents now receive much of their clinical instruction in an outpatient setting (i.e., the doctor's office), yet the physicians who train them receive no payment for their teaching endeavors. To bolster ambulatory care education at UCSF, the department of medicine aims to raise endowed funds and operating expenses to underwrite clinical education programs.
Emphasizing the critical need for such funding, Grossman added: "With help from UCSF's incredibly generous supporters, we will be able to dramatically advance the skills, clinical judgment, and professionalism of our trainees."
