Over 100 community members celebrated the May 10 opening of UCSF's Asian Heart and Vascular Center, located at UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion. Xiaocheng Liu, MD, President and CEO of the Tianjin Economic Development Area (TEDA) International Cardiovascular Hospital, delivered the keynote speech, followed by traditional Chinese music, a performance by the Dragon Horse Lion Dance Team, and an appearance by Tiffani Mah, Miss San Francisco Chinatown 2006.

The first facility of its kind in the United States, the new Center will provide advanced cardiovascular treatment uniquely suited to the cultural, linguistic, and medical needs of Asians, who make up approximately one-third of San Francisco's population. Speaking at the ceremony, Center Director Gordon Fung, MD, emphasized that the Center will both set the pace for basic and clinical research and serve as a leader in outreach and education to Asian communities in the Bay Area.
"As the Bay Area's Asian population increases, so does the need for cardiovascular specialists who can understand, communicate, and treat this community," Fung said. "UCSF's Asian Heart and Vascular Center will go the distance to meet that need."
