California Attorney General Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown, Jr., visited UCSF on October 2 to help Chancellor J. Michael Bishop, MD, and others congratulate Kenneth E. Covinsky, MD, MPH, on being named the Edmund G. Brown, Sr., Distinguished Professor in Geriatrics.
The professorship, the first of its kind at UCSF, started as an endowed chair funded by the state. In 2000, the Legislature allocated $4 million to the University of California to create two chairs in geriatrics. One was named for Edmund G. "Pat" Brown, Sr., and the other for Ronald W. Reagan, both former governors of California. UCSF was chosen to host the Brown chair, which has since been expanded into a distinguished professorship. The Reagan chair is at UC Irvine.
