UCSF Celebrates Stem Cell Anniversary

On November 29, UCSF celebrated the 25th anniversary of its co-discovery of stem cells. Held at the Mission Bay Community Center, the event featured a panel discussion focusing on the complexities and promise of stem cells as a possible therapeutic tool for addressing devastating ailments such as diabetes, Parkinson's, and heart disease. Moderated by School of Medicine Dean David Kessler, MD, the panel included leading UCSF researchers Arnold Kriegstein, MD, PhD, director of the Institute for Regeneration Medicine; Michael German, MD, associate director for the Diabetes Center; and Yerem Yeghiazarians, MD, director of the Cardiac Stem Cell Translation Program. The Larry L. Hillblom Foundation, which supports basic scientific and clinical research, sponsored the event.

Charlotte's Web Screening Benefits Young Patients

A special December 12 screening of the Paramount Pictures film Charlotte's Web benefited UCSF Children's Hospital and George Mark Children's House, which cares for children with life-limiting and terminal illnesses and their families. Held at the Loews Metreon Theater in San Francisco, the screening was a partnership between Paramount Pictures, Kerner Entertainment, George Mark Children's House, and UCSF. "These charitable organizations are the leaders in direct services and advocacy for seriously ill children and their families," said Jordan Kerner, executive producer of Kerner Entertainment and honorary co-chair of the screening. "We are delighted that this screening can help these amazing organizations that do such important work in the Bay Area."
