"Raising Hope" Brings in Over $3.75 Million for Cancer Center

In a rare appearance, Grammy Award-winning star Bette Midler performed January 31 at "Raising Hope," the sixth biennial fundraising event benefiting the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center. Nanci Fredkin and Cathy Podell, UCSF Foundation Board members and co-chairs of the UCSF Cancer Council, chaired the event.

More than 700 guests dined in an intimate, cabaret-like setting within a floor-to-ceiling plush red tent designed by Stanlee Gatti. After Midler's performance, guests were treated to a gourmet dinner, followed by a lively auction of unique items including tickets to the final show of American Idol. An additional "Fund-a-Need" auction raised almost $450,000 to launch the Fund for Cancer Care Services, which will provide vital support services for low- and middle-income cancer patients.

Ticket sales, generous bids at the live auction, and Fund-a-Need support elevated the evening's fundraising total to over $3.75 million to support the Cancer Center's research, clinical care, and community health initiatives. In a strong testament to the work of UCSF and the Comprehensive Cancer Center, Midler donated her performance to the event.
