Greenhoods Gift Honors Well-Known SF Pediatrician
Martha and Herbert Greenhood

Herbert Greenhood's grandson learned the scope of his grandfather's medical practice on an adolescent trip to Israel. "When the San Francisco kids on the bus heard Adam's last name, they all said, 'He's my pediatrician!' " Martha Greenhood recalls. "Adam came back and asked me, 'Was Grandpa everybody's pediatrician?' And he was."

Herbert Greenhood died at the age of 88 in July 2004. Honoring both her late husband's long practice and his medical school alma mater, Martha Greenhood gave UCSF $100,000 to name an area in the soon-to-be-built UCSF Children's Hospital at Mission Bay.

Herbert graduated from UC Berkeley in 1936 and earned his MD from UCSF in 1940. Having worked through school on ROTC, he joined the Army and moved to Waco, Texas, where he met his wife. He served during World War II in England, France and Germany.

When Herbert was discharged from the Army, he and Martha moved to San Francisco to start a new life together. "He didn't want anything more to do with the Army," says Martha. "He wanted to be a pediatrician." He worked in private practice until his retirement in 1981.

The Greenhoods had two sons – Jay, a dentist in Albuquerque, and Gary, a physician in Atlanta. Martha now enjoys four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

"It was a great life," Martha reflects. "After he retired, Herb went to rounds at UCSF and other children's hospitals, swam and volunteered at the Randall Museum. I was a docent at the de Young Museum. We both were active in the PTA, Temple Emanu-El and the Jewish Community Center." They traveled to Europe, Asia, Australia, Japan and Israel. They attended the opera, symphony and ballet, and belonged to the Caper Cutters square dancing club.

Despite their active life, Martha's favorite memory of her husband is the quiet moments. "It was the walks we used to take in Stern Grove every afternoon," she shares. "He was wonderful. I'm just sorry to lose him. And I want to remember him in this way."
