UCSF Founders Day Banquet and Medal Award Ceremony

UCSF awards its highest honor, the UCSF Medal, at the annual Founders Day Banquet, held at the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco. The medal is given by the campus to people from the community who have made outstanding personal contributions in the health sciences and whose efforts mirror the goals and values of UCSF. Past recipients of the UCSF Medal have included philanthropist Richard Goldman, Chairman of the Board of Intel Corp. Andrew Grove, PhD, and former Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala.

When: Wednesday, April 15 / 7pm
Where: Ritz-Carlton, 600 Stockton St., San Francisco
Tickets: $100 per person

The recipients of the UCSF Medal for 2009 are:

  • Dorothy F. Bainton — former UCSF Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, the first woman chair of a department in the School of Medicine at UCSF, and current Professor Emeritus of Pathology
  • William K. Bowes Jr. — Founding Partner of U.S. Venture Partners and renowned Bay Area philanthropist
  • Dolores Huerta — Co-founder and First Vice President Emeritus of the United Farm Workers of America and President of the Dolores Huerta Foundation
  • Robert S. Langer — Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and innovator in chemical and biomedical engineering
  • In addition, awards will be presented for recipients of the UCSF Faculty Research Lecturer Award, the Distinguished Clinical Research Lecturer Award, the Distinction in Teaching Award and the Distinction in Mentoring Award.

    J. Craig Venter, PhD, is regarded as one of the leading scientists of the 21st century for his invaluable contributions to genomic research. He founded and serves as president of the J. Craig Venter Institute, a nonprofit research and support organization with more than 400 scientists and staff dedicated to human, microbial, plant and environmental genomic research; the exploration of social and ethical issues in genomics; and seeking alternative energy solutions through genomics. He was listed on the Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world in both 2007 and 2008.
